Metro Water Recovery Earns National Recognition for Children’s Video
DENVER — Metro Water Recovery (Metro) has earned national recognition for its children’s video that teaches about the wastewater treatment process.
The video received a National Environmental Achievement Award in the Public Information & Education category. Metro was recognized during a ceremony on Feb. 3 at the National Association of Clean Water Agencies’ winter conference in Miami.
Metro’s mascot, Fin the orange-spotted sunfish, explains how Metro protects the region’s health and environment by recovering resources. Metro has used the video for a variety of educational outreach, including a virtual classroom where students watch the video and then ask a wastewater expert questions during a video call.
“The children’s video and Q&A helped our students build an understanding of water recovery in our community,” said Erin Dunlap, an Environmental-STEAM teacher at Heatherwood Elementary School, whose class participated in the online experience. “As they learn about issues surrounding water conservation, they will build on this knowledge of the wastewater treatment process.”
The children’s video is available in both English and Spanish on Metro’s website.
Metro’s educational efforts extend far, with the organization also offering tours of its two wastewater treatment plants and even a professional development course for teachers.
