Educational video features Metro Water Recovery’s new mascot

DENVER — Metro Water Recovery has unveiled Fin, the orange-spotted sunfish, as the organization’s mascot to help educate young people about Metro’s work and mission.

Fin is the star of the recently released children’s video, which teaches about the wastewater treatment process and explains how Metro protects the region’s health and environment by recovering resources.

“We clean millions of gallons of water every day to be suitable for agriculture, aquatic life, recreation and water supply,” Public Information Specialist Maritza Franco said. “The water we clean is put back into the South Platte River, making up 85% of the river’s flow for nine or more months out of the year. We are excited to have Fin bring our story to life with this video!”

Fin represents one of more than 20 species of fish found in the South Platte River. In the animated children’s video, Fin helps the audience understand what wastewater is, how Metro cleans it, and our role as stewards of the environment.

The eight-and-a-half-minute-long video is available to anyone interested in learning about resource recovery.

Metro’s educational efforts extend far, with the organization also offering tours of the two wastewater treatment plants, virtual classrooms featuring a Q&A with knowledgeable employees, and even a professional development course for teachers.
